In 2022, the European Union introduced voluntary commitments for technology companies to combat disinformation, which were set to become formalized under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
Google initially complied but later reversed its stance, arguing that the requirements are unsuitable for its services. The tech giant has informed the European Commission that it will not implement fact-checking on its search results and YouTube videos, stating that such measures are neither appropriate nor effective. This decision was communicated in a letter from Google’s global affairs president, Kent Walker, to the Commission’s content and technology head, Renate Nikolay.
